SUMMARY:Qais Essar
DESCRIPTION:Experience the wonder of classical music from Afghanistan and India at the historic ASU Kerr\, loved for its incredible acoustics and cherished by the Indian classical music community. \n\n\n\nQais Essar opens a sacred sonic time portal connecting the ancient Hindu Kush mountain region to today. As a contemporary Afghan composer and musician\, he uses the rabab\, a 2\,500 year old lute-like instrument\, to blend traditional Afghan music with contemporary influences that range from Western rock and indie folk to the evolving traditional sounds found along the Silk Road. \n\n\n\nQais will be joined by Shreyas Iyer. His intricate rhythms on tabla are a perfect complement to the rabab. Expect Indian classical raga\, plus folk songs from across Afghanistan\, all in Qais’ signature style. \n\n\n\nQais has toured extensively\, sharing his sounds globally and selling out venues from the US to Australia and beyond. Experience a performance in the intimate\, casual and historic setting of ASU Kerr. \n\n\n\nHe performed with the Oxford Philharmonic\, Stephen Malkmus and composed for the Oscar-nominated film “Three Songs for Benazir.” He also contributed to “The Breadwinner\,” produced by Angelina Jolie and directed by Nora Twomey. His original song “The Crown Sleeps” earned him a Canadian Screen Award. \n\n\n\nThis concert is a perfect opportunity for newcomers to explore Qais’ unique signature sound and for fans of more traditional forms of Afghan and Indian music to witness true virtuosos in action.

She also brought home numerous Grammy nominations and 3 prestigious\, back to back (1979\, 1980\, 1981) Bay Area Music Awards for Best Country-Folk Recordings.  Lacy’s collaboration with Willie Nelson on his platinum Half Nelson CD was a high spot for her a s she was the only woman featured on that recording\, and was awarded a Platinum Record for her participation. She also received a couple of Gold Records from Hank Williams Jr. in 1985 for her support performances throughout his Five-0 Tour. She toured for years with the likes of the Oakridge Boys\, Willie Nelson\, Merle Haggard\, and Hank Williams Jr. to name just a few. \n\n\n\nHer hit records are legendary million-airplay cuts: 16th Avenue (the Anthem for Nashville songwriters was voted one of Country’s Top 100 Songs ever by Billboard Magazine)\, Crazy Blue Eyes\, Hillbilly Girl with the Blues\, Takin’ It Easy\, Everybody Makes Mistakes\, and the worldwide hit Black Coffee.  Her 2006 album Last Wild Place Anthology went #1 on the World Independent Chart\, and a year later went #1 on the American Western Music Chart.  In 2019 that same album was awarded the Pete Huttlinger award for Music Excellence by Strictly Country Magazine and the Spirit Awards. \n\n\n\nIn 2019 Lacy released a 4 song EP titled Scarecrow.  When hearing the title song\, her good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked “that song makes you a whole new you\, and it makes me a whole new me.”  And that’s exactly the response Lacy was hoping for.  In 2024 Lacy released an album titled For The Black Sheep\, a collection of songs with meaningful lyrics and messages of unity and acceptance for all of us.
