SUMMARY:An Evening with Paul Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Some of us know Phoenix native Paul Wilson as “the guy who remade The Poseidon Adventure\,” while others think of him as the artist whose work of the last 16 years has reimagined alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald as a swoony dreamboat who never hurt a fly. Others know Wilson as “that 1950s guy” whose beautifully-appointed mid-century home has been documented in print and on television. “An Evening with Paul Wilson” is a celebration of all of these men. One of Arizona’s most fascinating local artists\, Wilson is a painter\, filmmaker and assemblage artist who’s fascinated with pop culture and post-Cold War chaos; a man whom Kirstie Alley once referred to in The National Enquirer as “that weirdo who’s in love with my husband.” Join us for an evening that will include a gallery show of Wilson’s work\, a montage of clips from his short films\, and an onstage interview with the artist.

SUMMARY:No-No Boy
DESCRIPTION:Join Julian and Emilia Saporiti of No-No Boy for an immersive multimedia concert at ASU Kerr. The event combines folk songs\, place-based sound recordings\, archival materials\, thermal images of desert environments and storytelling to communicate the rich possibilities of engaging with place. Some of the songs performed at the concert will emerge from arts-based fieldwork conducted in the Phoenix Valley.  \n\n\n\nNo-No Boy’s integrative approach to music-making prompts us to consider how individuals often “find themselves and a sense of community through the past.” The sonic samples of place\, including from immigrant detention centers and WWII Japanese internment camps\, run through the landscape of No-No Boy’s music\, making present the people and places often absented in the telling of history. In a documentary made about No-No Boy’s work\, Julian states\, “History is a mess that doesn’t make sense…… but songs are such a wonderful way to deal with it. You can sit with the mess and sing through the mess – and that can allow you to shine light on what’s happening today.” \n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but you must register in advance.  \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. AZ MST for a light reception. \n\n\n\nConcert will begin at 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nNo-No Boy is a collaborative performance with Julian Saporiti and Emilia Halvorsen Saporiti. The No-No Boy project developed as a central component of Julian’s PhD research at Brown University. They have released three albums: 1942\, 1975 and Electric Empire. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCo-sponsorships: \n\n\n\nFunded by a Seed Grant from ASU’s Humanities Institute\, and sponsored by ASU’s Desert Humanities Initiative\, School of Historical\, Philosophical & and Religious Studies\, Environmental Humanities Initiative\, Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation and Public History.  Additional support from the College of Integrative Sciences & Arts and the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication.

SUMMARY:Annie Moscow and Friends: "Land of Dreams" Concert and Stories
DESCRIPTION:LAND OF DREAMS \n\n\n\nby Annie Moscow\, in concert  \n\n\n\nwith Wesley Skinner and Sam Russo  \n\n\n\n“bracingly smart music”   \n\n\n\nAmericana Highways 2/24 \n\n\n\n“an album full of depth and emotion… Life lessons learned by living them. Anyone with a predilection for excellent storytelling will appreciate  \n\n\n\nMoscow’s marvelous collection of songs…”  \n\n\n\nAmplify Music 2/24 \n\n\n\nCome enjoy a fun\, thought provoking and captivating evening as Annie Moscow\, along with her trio\, perform the songs from her newly released album\, “Land of Dreams” (2/24).   \n\n\n\nOriginally from Philadelphia\, Annie Moscow began her music career as a classical pianist and then a songwriter. Her credits include SARAH VAUGHN\, SISTER SLEDGE and MICKEY MOUSE.  Since 2000\, she has released six solo CDs\, including “Passing Trains”\, produced by Grammy nominated producer\, the late John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter) rocketing to #20 on the Folk/DJ charts in February\, 2017.  The songs of “Land of Dreams” were written during\, and inspired by\, the Covid years.  When the world went into lockdown\, Moscow used that quiet time to create and reflect on a lifetime of twists and turns\, lost loves\, and lessons learned.  With a gift for cinematic storytelling\, Moscow’s work often elicits comparisons to other pianist/cultural documentarians including Billy Joel\, Laura Nyro\, and Carole King.    \n\n\n\nWesley Skinner is currently completing a DMA from Arizona State University.   Wesley holds BM & MM degrees (emphasis in Cello Pedagogy) from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Melissa Kraut.  Wesley’s solo competition top prize wins include the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition\, Paducah Symphony Young Artist Competition\, Tennessee Cello Workshop\, Lewisville Lake Symphony International String Competition\, and the ASU Concerto Competition.  Wesley also served as founding member of the Laniakea String Quartet\, which won first prize in The Sixth Hong Kong International Chamber Music Competition. \n\n\n\nSam Russo is a jazz drumset player from the Phoenix area. Under the direction of Dom Moio and Lewis Nash\, he holds a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from Arizona State University. Sam has had the great privilege of performing with both Dick Oatts and Jim McNeely with the ASU Concert Jazz Band\, as well as both Harold Mabern and Joel Frahm as a part of his ASU Jazz Combo. He’s also performed a number of times with Jane Monheit\, Bruce Forman\, Howard Alden\, Gunhild Carling\, Billy Stritch\, Mike Kocour\, Nick Manson\, Eric Rasmussen\, Jeff Libman and many others. He can be seen performing frequently around the Valley at an assortment of restaurants\, jazz clubs and other events. \n\n\n\nYou can learn more about Annie Moscow and her music at:  www.anniemoscow.com
