SUMMARY:Coffee at Kerr - The Barber of Seville
DESCRIPTION:The Barber of Seville \n\n\n\nLove\, mistaken identity\, and humor are woven throughout The Barber of Seville\, Rossini’s comic opera masterpiece. The Barber of Seville is considered one of the greatest opera buffa of all time\, maintaining its popularity for over two hundred years. \n\n\n\nCount Almaviva falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful Rosina\, the young ward of a grumpy and elderly Bartolo who intends to marry her and claim her dowry. Dressed in disguise\, Almaviva tries to earn Rosina’s affection for who he really is\, rather than for his money and status. Almaviva assumes multiple identities including a poor student\, a drunken soldier\, and a singing tutor and priest. With the help of his companion Figaro\, Almaviva stops at nothing as he pursues Rosina through a series of comical hijinks and bait-and-switch facades. Eventually revealing his true identity\, he manages to win Rosina’s heart and the pair evade the disgruntled Bartolo\, with love and laughter triumphing in the end. \n\n\n\nCo-presented with Arizona Opera \n\n\n\nRefreshments provided by Renegade Coffee Company\, renegadecoffeeaz.com \n\n\n\nCoffee events are part of a series of free\, informal presentations featuring Arizona Opera performers and guest musicians. We encourage patrons to contribute a suggested donation of $5 and bring a can of food or sealed personal item to be donated to Vista del Camino Food Bank. \n\n\n\nCoffee and refreshments are served in the Crescendo Garden at 9:30 a.m. Event begins at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\nThis program is also livestreamed and available to watch after the event. Tune in at our YouTube Channel

SUMMARY:No-No Boy
DESCRIPTION:Join Julian and Emilia Saporiti of No-No Boy for an immersive multimedia concert at ASU Kerr. The event combines folk songs\, place-based sound recordings\, archival materials\, thermal images of desert environments and storytelling to communicate the rich possibilities of engaging with place. Some of the songs performed at the concert will emerge from arts-based fieldwork conducted in the Phoenix Valley.  \n\n\n\nNo-No Boy’s integrative approach to music-making prompts us to consider how individuals often “find themselves and a sense of community through the past.” The sonic samples of place\, including from immigrant detention centers and WWII Japanese internment camps\, run through the landscape of No-No Boy’s music\, making present the people and places often absented in the telling of history. In a documentary made about No-No Boy’s work\, Julian states\, “History is a mess that doesn’t make sense…… but songs are such a wonderful way to deal with it. You can sit with the mess and sing through the mess – and that can allow you to shine light on what’s happening today.” \n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but you must register in advance.  \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. AZ MST for a light reception. \n\n\n\nConcert will begin at 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nNo-No Boy is a collaborative performance with Julian Saporiti and Emilia Halvorsen Saporiti. The No-No Boy project developed as a central component of Julian’s PhD research at Brown University. They have released three albums: 1942\, 1975 and Electric Empire. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCo-sponsorships: \n\n\n\nFunded by a Seed Grant from ASU’s Humanities Institute\, and sponsored by ASU’s Desert Humanities Initiative\, School of Historical\, Philosophical & and Religious Studies\, Environmental Humanities Initiative\, Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation and Public History.  Additional support from the College of Integrative Sciences & Arts and the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication.
