The Valencia Baryton Project is a dynamic ensemble reimagining the forgotten sound of the baryton, an 18th-century string instrument blending bowed and plucked strings. Founded by barytonist Matthew Baker, the group also features violist Máté Szücs and cellist David Apellániz. Together, they revive Haydn’s 123 trios and other works written for baryton, viola and cello, while expanding the repertoire through modern commissions. The trio has performed across Europe and the Americas, earning acclaim for their inventive programming and polished sound. Their recordings on Naxos have received international praise, bringing new life to what was once considered the pinnacle of aristocratic instruments.
